Training transforms support for young people with disabilities
We enjoyed hearing an update from Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel about their two-year project focused on inclusive education for young people with disabilities in Uganda. They have successfully run teacher training to build the capacity of staff to support different types of disabilities; and community engagement with parents and other stakeholders.
Impact
This has led to a transformational attitudes in a community where some had believed that disabled children were possessed. The community are now giving more care and assistance to people with disabilities. Fathers who had abandoned their families have returned. More public transportation providers, who had excluded young disabled people, are willing to take the children to school. Young people have increased confidence to socialise and are being more accepted by their peers.
Communities outside the target area have become involved, leading to a rise in the number of young people supported cohort, from 140 to 250 children.
